Chapter Ten

Sam

After sending Mike off, I stood there, looking at everyone. How the fuck was I supposed to save them all? I needed Charlie and my little girl. God, if they didn’t make it, it would kill me. I wanted to just leave everyone else and take my boys to find their mum and sister. But I knew that I couldn’t. They were relying on me to get them out of this. Shaking my head to clear it, I walked over to Kaya.

“Hey, Kaya. I need you to arm everyone old enough to fire a weapon with the self-loading pistols. Then jump in with Ari and Lauren. We will be leaving in the next ten minutes.”

Kaya looked like he was going to shit himself but nodded and went to Noah’s vehicle, where the weapons were.

I walked over to the storage room where Charlie had put Cade, John’s army buddy who had been bitten. Looking through the square bit of glass in the door, I could see that he was just sitting there on the blanket. As I opened the door, he looked up.

“Cade, my name is Sam. I’m Charlie’s husband. We are surrounded by zombies and have to get out of here. I could use your help. It’s a lot to ask, but I figure you’re either going to turn into a zombie soon or you’re immune. I need someone to open the shed doors so the vehicles can leave. We would not lea—”

“I’ll do it.” Cade stood up.

“Okay, but I need you to know that you may be overwhelmed.” I hated having to ask him, but no one else had been bitten and he may or may not survive either way.

“Sam, I don’t want to turn into one of them, but I feel fine so I’m guessing I’m immune. I can handle a couple more bites if I can help you save all those kids.”

I shook his hand, nodding my head. “Thank you.”

“I’m going to need one of those Minimi machine guns and a pistol,” he added.

“Yeah, there’s a kid called Kaya who's handing out weapons. He’ll sort you out.”

Cade nodded and headed towards Kaya. I sure hope I didn’t just sign his death warrant. Looking around, I saw everyone seemed to be in a vehicle or close to getting in one. To make sure we had everyone, I went from vehicle to vehicle and ticked off names. My mum thought it would be a good way to make sure no one was left behind, so she had written a list of the names of everyone in the group. I grabbed the list, which was on a clipboard with a pen. I headed to the first vehicle, my Bushmaster with a plow attached. I ticked off Nalon, Katrina, and Cassie. Then to the second vehicle which Mike would be driving, ticking everyone off in the front and back. Ari’s was to be the third vehicle and I ticked everyone off the list except for Kaya, who was still handing out weapons.
